Academic Counseling
and Tutoring

International Academic and Transfer Counselors offer personalized support to keep students on track toward their goals. Small class sizes and free tutoring services in various subjects ensure academic success.

and Internships

Employment Opportunities for F-1 Students

International students with an F-1 visa may have opportunities to work while studying at MiraCosta College and after graduation.

On-Campus Jobs

F-1 students may work on campus while they study.

  • Work up to 19.5 hours per week during the semester

  • Work up to 40 hours per week during winter and summer breaks

  • No special work authorization is required for on-campus jobs

Examples of on-campus jobs include:

  • Tutoring other students

  • Working at the library

  • Working at the bookstore

  • Working in food and dining services

  • Working at Food Pantry, International Office, Welcome Center

Off-Campus Internships (CPT)

After completing one academic year (two semesters) in the U.S., F-1 students may be eligible for Curricular Practical Training (CPT).

CPT allows students to:

  • Work off campus

  • Gain experience in their field of study

  • Can be paid

To participate in CPT, students must:

  • Receive approval from the International Student Office

  • Enroll in an internship class related to the job

Work After Graduation (OPT)

Many F-1 students can also gain work experience after theycomplete their program through Optional Practical Training (OPT).

OPT allows students to:

  • Work in the United States for up to 12 months after graduation

  • Work in a job related to their major or field of study

Students must apply for OPT and receive work authorization from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) before starting employment. MiraCosta College provides OPT workshops every semester.

Different Ways to Study at MiraCosta College

There are several ways for international students to study at MiraCosta College.

Study on Campus
(F-1 Student Visa)

Students can study full-time on campus with an F-1 student visa.
This option allows you to enjoy the full international student experience, including campus life, student activities, and in-person classes.

Online Study from Your Home Country

Students may also take online courses while living outside the United States. This option allows you to study at MiraCosta College while saving on the cost of living in Southern California.

Dual Enrollment for High School Students

MiraCosta College partners with an international high school completion program called The Academy at MiraCosta (TAM).

Students in this program can:

  • Take college classes on the MiraCosta campus

  • Work toward high school completion

  • Build academic skills and confidence

This experience helps students become independent and prepared for full-time college study in the United States.
